Pillastro Primitivo 2020 – Italy
Pillastro is one of our most popular Italian reds, with consumers appreciating the fullness, warmth, and bold fruit. It’s from Puglia in southern Italy, best known for huge, smoky Primitivo wines. This 2020 is from Angelo Maci, a local hero who has fought the big guns and championed the small grower for decades. He began the cave 40 years ago with only 15 growers; today, there are 1,000, and he knows them all by name. He goes on to say that he has saved the lives of winemakers and grape growers, but also those ancient ways that have made these wines so distinctive, flavorful, and potent. After years of battling ticks, he’s become a key figure in the quality movement—a rich, powerful red wine with excellent compatibility with spicy tomato pasta.
