Winery Info/Brand
The Cloudy Bay estate in Marlborough, New Zealand, was founded by David Hohnen in 1985. The estate is located at the entrance to the eponymous bay, surrounded by breathtaking scenery between the Pacific Ocean and the Richmond Range. Cloudy Bay wines are made with the utmost care for terroir and the natural environment, each of which is reflected in its unique flavor.
The vineyard – Cloudy Bay: Sauvignon Blanc 2022
Cloudy Bay’s Sauvignon Blanc 2022 is produced from vineyards and estates in the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick, and Brancott sub-regions of New Zealand‘s Wairau Valley. The soils are drained of stony alluvial loam that contains some clay.
The vintage
Although the beginning of the year saw favorable weather conditions that permitted an early budburst, September and October were marked by cold nights and frosts that, owing to the use of the estate’s protection equipment, had no effect on the vineyard. The climatic volatility in December, which caused the uneven flowering period, significantly reduced the harvests. The optimal temperatures that followed encouraged the uniform and qualitative ripening of the grapes, with a high degree of acidity. A rich and exquisite vintage was created as a result of this Cloudy Bay 2022 Sauvignon Blanc‘s ultimate blend of 87 different plots.
Vinification and Ageing
The free-run juice is cold-decanted, racked, and inoculated with selected yeasts following the harvests. The majority of the fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with about 4% of the mixture being aged in ancient large French oak barrels and vats.
